This week in Computer Studies, we learned how to use the photo editing software, Fireworks. Fireworks is somewhat like Photoshop. I learned many new tools such as the lasso, wand, rectangle tool, and others. I turned myself into a navi and learned how to use more than one layer.

This week in computer studies I learned many new things such as what internet, LAN, world wide web, TCP/IP, and HTML were. These are some notes that I took during lessons.

Internet-internet is essentially many computers distribute all over the world

LAN-is a local area network. This glabal network of computers is linked together through a process of telecommunications. Connected by wires

World Wide Web-prototyped in 1990 and released in 1993. It was invented by a Swiss scientist as a way to connect physicist world wide

TCP/IP-the protocol or set of rules that governs the exchange of data over the Internet. It sets rules that help computers understand how to talk to each other and share.

This week in computer studies I learned how to create a safe password. An ideal password is at least 14 characters long and has a variety of letters spread throughout the keyboard. Avoid using sequence or repeated characters such as 123456789 or asdfghjkl and personal information such as your name, telephone number, date of birth, etc. Some tricks to passwords include replacing all the ‘a’ with @, all the ’s’ with $, any space with %, any ‘o’ with 0 and any ‘i’ with !. Complex passwords are very important to have as they can make a huge difference in what hackers can steal from you.

This product allows factory workers to crouch and walk up and down stairs with ease. They say that it should be just as easy as riding a bike. Also, it reduces stress and saves your energy. It is easy on the joints so no pain should occur. In my opinion I think it is a very useful product and would be good to have if the company paid for it as it is a pricy machine.

This week in computer studies, I learned about the hazards that can come to your computer. Those things include virus’s/worms, trojan’s, denial of service, and tricksters. A virus is a software program capable of reproducing itself and usually capable of causing great harm to files or other programs on the same computer. A torjan is a program that appears desirable but actually contains something harmful. Denial of service is when you receive a virus and access to your anti-virus software/websites. A trickster is a criminal program that pretends to be something it is not;usually used for identity theft. Also, I learned the terms phishing and spoofing. Phishing is when someone tries to “fish” for your personal information such as usernames, passwords, credit card information, etc. Spoofing is a method of attacking a computer program, in which the program is modified so as to appear to be working but is actually not.

This article is just a warning to what people are really capable of. If someone could just simply sit behind a computer at home and hack a huge network such as yahoo, imagine what more they could do as technology continues to develop. Bank accounts being hacked and huge networks crashing will become a regular thing unless our security systems become stronger. What we can do to protect ourselves from hackers is very minimal. However, there are some things that we can easily do. Make sure your firewall is on at all times when using the internet, be careful what you download as it may contain spyware, viruses, etc., and make sure all the sites you visit are safe.
